Questions

What does "not taken" mean here?
Mojang's profile lookup found no Java Edition account with this name. That is the same check the name-change page runs first. It does not know about names the filter blocks or names inside a 37-day hold, so a name can pass here and still be refused on your profile page.
Why can a free name still be refused?
Two reasons. Names that break the community guidelines (offensive words, impersonating staff or a brand) are rejected by a filter. And when a player renames, their old name is held for them: they can take it back after 30 days, and others can claim it after about 37 days.
How often can I change my name?
Once every 30 days on Java Edition. Bedrock uses your Xbox gamertag; the first gamertag change is free and later ones cost a fee.
What are the rules for a Java name?
3 to 16 characters. Letters, digits and the underscore only. Not case sensitive, so Steve and steve are the same name.
Does the check work for Bedrock gamertags?
No. Gamertags live on Xbox, not Mojang, and Xbox checks them when you change yours. This page checks Java Edition names.
Is a name that just dropped free right away?
A dropped name shows as not taken as soon as Mojang releases it. Popular short names are usually claimed within seconds by people running scripts, so a free result on a short name is worth acting on at once.
