How it works

  • Click a square in the grid, then search for the item that goes there. Right-click a square to empty it.
  • Click the result square and pick what the recipe makes, then set how many.
  • Choose whether the shape matters. Most recipes are shaped.
  • Name it, download the pack, drop it in your world's datapacks folder and run /reload.

Java Edition. Data packs are a Java feature, so this does not apply to Bedrock.

Questions

Where does the file go?
In your world's datapacks folder, as the zip you download. Then run /reload, or leave and rejoin the world.
What is the difference between shaped and shapeless?
A shaped recipe needs the items in that arrangement, though it works anywhere in the grid. A shapeless one only cares which items are in it, in any squares at all.
Can I overwrite a recipe the game already has?
Yes, by giving your recipe the same namespace and name as the original. That is an advanced move and it is easy to break something you wanted.
Does this work on a server?
Yes. A data pack goes in the world folder on a server exactly as it does in single player, and every player gets the recipe.
Will it work on Bedrock?
No. Data packs are a Java Edition feature. Bedrock uses behavior packs, which are a different format.
Why does my recipe not show up?
Usually the pack is in the wrong folder, or /reload has not been run. Check that the zip sits directly in datapacks and that the game listed it when the world loaded.
