How it works

  • Pick the item, then tick the enchantments you want and set each level.
  • If the item has been on an anvil before, say how many times. That alone can decide whether the job is possible.
  • Read the two cards: the cheapest order and the one-at-a-time order most people use.
  • Follow the numbered steps. Each line is one anvil operation, with what it costs.

Java Edition. Bedrock prices enchantments differently, so these figures do not apply there.

Questions

Why does the order matter so much?
Because every trip to the anvil stamps the item with a prior work penalty that doubles: 0, then 1, 3, 7, 15, 31. Applying six books one at a time pays that penalty six times. Combining the books into pairs first, then joining the pairs, pays it far less often.
What does Too Expensive mean?
In Survival and Adventure an anvil refuses any single operation costing 40 levels or more. It is the one step that matters, not the running total, so a plan of three cheap steps can cost more overall and still work.
Does renaming cost extra?
One level, on top of everything else in the same operation. Renaming on its own does not add a prior work penalty, which is why people rename early.
Is a book cheaper than another item?
Yes, about half. Silk Touch from a book costs 4 times its level and from another pickaxe costs 8. That is why combining books first and applying them once is cheaper twice over.
Why is my item at a penalty already?
Because it has been on an anvil before. Repairing, renaming and enchanting all count. Set the box on the left to how many times, and the price above updates.
Is Bedrock the same?
No, and this page is Java. Bedrock charges for the level a combination ADDS, where Java charges for the final level, so Bedrock is cheaper for merging two equal books.
