Custom Minecraft Paintings

Hang your own picture on the wall. Choose a picture, pick the size in blocks, and download a resource pack that puts it on the paintings you selected.

Choose a picture to see it at painting size.

This painting is 2 by 2 blocks, so the file is 32 by 32 pixels. That is all the detail the game shows.

Which painting to replace

The game picks a painting at random when you place one, so replace several of a size to get yours more often. A painting marked command only is never placed on its own, so replacing it changes nothing you would meet by accident.

How the picture fits

Java Edition only. Bedrock keeps every painting in one shared image, so a single painting cannot be replaced there on its own.

How it works

  • Choose a picture from your computer. Any common image file works.
  • Pick the size in blocks. The tool tells you the pixel size that goes with it, which is 16 pixels per block.
  • Tick the paintings you want to replace. The game picks one of a size at random, so ticking several makes yours appear more often.
  • Choose how the picture fits: filled and cropped, whole with clear space around it, or stretched to shape.
  • Download the pack and turn it on under Options, Resource Packs. To put your character on an item instead, try the totem maker.

The pack holds only the picture you supplied, drawn at the painting's size. None of the game's own artwork is included.

Questions

How do I install the pack?
Put the .zip in your resourcepacks folder, then turn it on under Options, Resource Packs. You do not need to unzip it.
Why does the game show a different painting?
Because the game picks one of the paintings of that size at random when you place it. Replace several of one size and yours comes up more often. Break the painting and place it again to try for another one.
Why does my photo look so blurry?
Because a painting is 16 pixels per block. A one by one painting is a 16 pixel square, which is smaller than most icons. Pick a larger size, or use a picture with big simple shapes rather than fine detail.
Does this work on Bedrock?
No, and this is a real limit rather than a missing feature. Bedrock keeps every painting in one shared image, so a single painting cannot be replaced there without editing that shared file. Java keeps each painting in its own file, which is why this works there.
What does command only mean?
Four paintings exist that a painting item never places. You only ever see one if somebody summons it with a command. Replacing one of those gives you a custom painting without changing any painting you would meet by accident.
Does this work on a server?
Yes. A resource pack changes what your own computer draws, so your paintings look like your picture wherever you play, and nobody else sees the change. A server that forces its own resource pack replaces yours while you are on it.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The picture is read, drawn at painting size and zipped in your browser. Nothing leaves your computer.
